Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 16:15:11 -0400 From: Doubts About Waking Subject: Re: Cindytalk Hey There-- Most Cindytalk releases don't sound much like Gordon's work with TMC--his vocals often have harsher, grittier sound, and the music is much more intense and noisy. Based in past list discussions, a lot of TMC fans find Cindytalk frustruating. For me, Cindytalk has created some of the most amazing music ever. "It's Luxury," a song from the first album, is an all-time favorite--very cathartic (but very unlike anything TMC has done). BTW--does anyone know the complete lyrics to this song??? My main problem with Cindytalk is it's very sporadic output. Of the 3 cd's now in print, _Wappinschaw_ is probably the best place to start. It's the most accessible and most varied. It has several songs that aren't too far from TMC. If I recall correctly, some 4ad-l people who didn't like the previous albums got into this one. It's released through World Serpent Distribution which means that most retail stores and the larger on-line places charge a fortune for it. I'd suggest buying from on of the smaller places like ear/rational, soleilmoon, siren, middle pillar, etc. There are also two out-of-print 'collaborations' you might look for. One is an album by Black Rose--I can't recall the name--on Contempo Records. Gordon does backing vocals on several tracks which include some Cindytalk covers. The second thing is a track credited to MacBeth on one of the older _Volume_ compilations (those cd's that come with large booklets and lots of photos of fish). That song is actually a demo for the second TMC album. Ivo didn't like the way Gordon sang it and Gordon wasn't willing to sing it in the style Ivo wanted. I hope some of this is helpful to you. Cindytalk is a fantastic project; it's unfortunate that some dismiss it simply because it doesn't sound like TMC. This has always seemed odd to me since Cindytalk predates TMC and it was mainly the Cindytalk recordings that attracted Ivo--after all, his work on that Cocteau Peel session was fairly minor. Please let me know if you have more questions. A very complete discography is at the Cindytalk web page at lacemaker.com. The song that is also of Cindytalk is Circle of Shit. I don't care for Cindytalk but there is a rare, out of print soundtrack which I can't remember the name of that was really good actually. Cindytalk was just too cacaphonous a band for my tastes (and that is saying alot since I am huge fan of Geraldine Fibbers). I still have "Camouglage Heart" on LP and CD which has been years since I listened to but recall it being a bit discordant and noisey but with some telltale lulls. I also have "In This World" a double album on a single CD which is a bit more atmospheric and has some instrumental pieces as well. "The Wind is Strong" I also have on CD but never listened to it (yet). Cindytalk was originally part of the Midnight Music camp (along with Essence and Sad Lovers and Giants and the Alvin Lives in Leeds comp with Lush--4ad connection). The albums have been reissued on World Serpent in the past few years. He is currently working on some new material. It is rather different, but similar. He did tell me he was talking to Invisible Records for possiable future releases. Beumble was the post Wappenshaw album. It wasn't a Cindytalk album and it was very techno. Just some tidbits, Jason
