Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 23:20:24 -0400 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: Limited Edition 12" TAD 8010 Here is some info from our man Tim Hall on Alma Road about the debut Cuba release on 4AD which just happens to be a limited vinyl-only 2-track 12" single: Monday May 11th sees the release of "Urban Light", the first single for 4AD by South Londoner's Cuba. If you have a copy of "Anakin" you will recognise Cuba. Or you may not... Check out the Kristin Hersh track and wait til it ends for Cuba's "Havana" after a short bit of silence... Released on 12" vinyl only, the release features two mixes of "Urban Light", the '7pm' and the '12am', choose your favourite! In February Cuba played their first show supporting 4AD labelmates Thievery Corporation and GusGus. On the strength of this show they were offered slots at Glastonbury and V98. Spring sees the boys treading the boards once more with gigs at the Concorde in Brighton, on Saturday May 16th, and their first London headline at Dingwalls on Tuesday 19th May. Support at Dingwalls comes from Liverpool's Surreal Madrid, Lowfinger and DJ Jon Carter. More shows to follow over the summer. So to reiterate... PM side - Urban Light (7.00pm) AM side - Urban Light (12.00am) The 12" will be limited to 500 in the UK, with around 500 being exported worldwide. So if you don't subscribe to the Mail Order Subscription serviceand don't want to miss out, contact Mail Order. Cost \pounds 4.50 + P&P. Cheers Tim @ 4AD Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 08:30:55 -0400 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: Suburban Delight TAD8010 : The first official release from 4AD's new signings Cuba titled "Urban Light" is another 12" only affair but this one is a wide release, not a promo. It's limited though, so don't waste time finding it. Two different versions of "Urban Light" are featured with my personal liking towards the B-side, the 12:00 am version (as opposed to the 7:00 pm version on the A-side). Art and design is courtesy of James Bates at ATOM. Is this the start of a trend in none v23 sleeves from 4AD? Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 07:05:07 +0100 From: malika & tim Subject: Re: 1998 A.D. Hi all! In reply to Jeff Keibel's 4AD list this year - Cuba have released a couple of promo 12" remixes: CUBA1 - Havana CUBA2 - (Flat Side) Fiery Cross/(Face Side) Foxy's Den Also, my version of TAD8010 Cuba - Urban Light has 'CUBA3' scratched over on the run off and 'TAD8010' printed beside it. Date: Thu, 9 Jul 1998 11:50:11 -0400 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: A warmth you'll remember Cuba, or "the Cuba boys" as Tim affectionately calls them, return with a commerically available single on July 27th. Tited "Cross The Line", this will be released as a 12" and CD single, both with the same tracks, which are a vocal and instrumental version. The vocal version features Mau, presumably the person singing. Also included are "Raise The Alarm" and "Foxy's Den". CUBA3, the latest in a series of Cuba promos, is a 12" that features the vocal and instrumental mixes in a generic black sleeve. The oddest 4AD catalogue number yet belongs to the "Cross The Line" promo CD. This one-track promo CD features the vocal mix of the title track, flaunts a July 13th release date (it's really July 27th) but it's the catalogue number that really breaks all the rules. The CD has BAD8012CD printed on the graphics, but the matrix reveals the true number to be "BAD8012CD PROMOTIONAL". The official BAD8012CD will be the one available in the shops... Anyways, to all the people who don't care about numbers, the song itself is a mid-tempo piece with Spirea X sounding synths and a rapper called Mau zinging off the Cuban manifesto in credible style. I like "Cross The Line" better than the previous Cuba single "Urban Light" (TAD8010), but decide for yourself when the new single comes out on July 27th. Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 14:17:50 -0400 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: All Saints/4AD connection Please forgive me. My last post on Cuba had an error about the "Cross The Line" EP. Here's the real deal from Tim @ 4AD: 'Cross the Line' is backed on both CD single & 12" vinyl by 2 tracks. They are 'Raise the Alarm' (new track) and a totally new recording of 'Foxy's Den' which was on the CUBA 2 promo. The instrumental version of 'Cross the Line' only features on the promo CUBA 3 (a 2 track promo 12" with 'Cross The Line' vocal). Vocals/rap are supllied by Mau. He was the rapper in the band Earthling. Cuba are currently working on their debut album which should see the light of day in the Autumn. They play the v98 festival in August on the Dance stage with the All Saints! They also are set to play the Borderline in London (home to some legendary 4AD shows over the years!) on Tues. 28th July. The day after 'Cross The Line' comes out.
