alright, it's been more than 36 hours since the galaxie 500 boxed set hit
the stores and not one of you heathens has mentioned it, so here i go...

picked it up yesterday (as everyone should have done)...missed the g500
boat the first time around, but i've been a fan of luna and that pierre
etoile stuff for awhile...about a month ago i found "on fire" used for $8
and i've been listening to it ever since (it makes really good post-breakup
music -- depressing yet optimistic at the same time)...on to the boxed
set...

it's all here, folks...all three albums, all the b-sides, the three-track
self-released demo tape, the cbgb's single and a bunch of outtakes...throw
in four videos and a booklet with each member of the band contributing a
bit of writing, and you've got quite a deal for only $42.99 (and to think i
paid almost that much for a digest compendium of the tortoise's world -- 1
cd)...

listened to all the cds yesterday, loved 'em...watched the videos today and
they were sublime, though i can see why they don't play 'em on mtv...my
favorite was the video for "tugboat."  it's all washed out 35 mm shots of
trees, shoes, faces, etc...the end of the video is a montage of things
blowing up...it kicks ass...

the packaging is a lovely purple box with that famous painting (i forget
the friggin' name!) that features all of the constellations -- in
silver...the individual cds have portions of the painting "the wonder of
the heavens" on 'em...also in purple...

as far as the book goes, there are some really nifty photos of the band,
old posters, etc...damon's piece and naomi's piece are the more
interesting/emotional of the two...both sort of describe the transition
from being someone in a band for the fun of it to becoming a "serious"
musician...

for those non-collectors-who-already-have-all-the-stuff types, this boxed
set is a (relatively) inexpensive way to enter the melencholy,
introspective and dreamy world of galaxie 500...enjoy...
