The miracle of the internet - yesterday I got a mail message from an American about an on-line music shop's catalogue, featuring a description of a Scottish band's EP. There it was in the racks of my local (real world non-digital) shop at lunchtime, and it is every bit as good as the tantalising description Jens mailed. Ganger - Half-Nelson EP (12" vinyl only, POMP 004, Vesuvius, PO Box 15096, Glasgow G4 9YZ) Three instrumental tracks, "Guts and Bravoodoo" (6.5 min), "Drummer's Arms and Bionic Thumbs" (5.5 min), "Jellyneck" (20 min). It's that currently fashionable krautrock vibe, Ganger have two bass players and two drummers (though they also play other instruments), plus a clarinettist/keyboard player. Sometimes it sounds like Bark Psychosis (early guitar-heavy stuff), or Th' Faith Healers (in their quieter moments), or the middle section of Stereolab's "Animal or Vegetable", or Tortoise, or Long Fin Killie. Pounding (but not monotonous) bass/drum to the fore, with the guitars and keyboards making supplementary noises in the background. I'd guess that we are going to see plenty of bands trying to make this sort of noise over the next year or so, but Ganger manage to sound like more than just a bunch of Stereolab fans who have heard a couple of Faust albums. Each volume in a 1 sided 12" with the second "etched" with a nasty and arbitrary looking spiral scratch over what looks to be a normal pressing of some sort. Does anyone know what this is all about - what the intention of a "trilogy" was here, and why they would choose to do 3 separate 1 - sided releases. There has to be some sort of method to the madness here...isn't there? kinglewi
