Gus Gus - Four track promo 12" (Gus 1)
This promo is the first fruit of the recent signing by 4AD of Iceland's
premier funk/techno/pop (or basically unpigeonholable) outfit Gus Gus. There are
four tracks. Chocolate appears twice, firstly in the original album form - a
dark, funk slow burner, and secondly as a new techno remix. This version is
minimal and bassy, very Detroit, with a distorted vocal that sounds like it was
recorded underwater. The other two tracks are also both remixes of songs from
the debut album (which was released in Iceland towards the end of last year).
Barry undergoes a techno/dub overhaul, with just a little of the choppy guitar
funk remaining from the original, and a mere snatch of the vocal. Mostly, what's
left is a loose hip-hop beat, and a minimal bass-synth chord sequence. Cold
Breath '79, which on the LP is a kind of remote, frigid piece of tr*p h*p has
become a massive bass monster, with a spare, trebly drum and bass beat, a jazzy
keyboard riff and little snatches of Emiliana Torrini's vocal. It's obvious that
this promo is aimed squarely at the dance market, and I think it'll do pretty
well if some of the dance snobs can overlook the fact that it comes from 4AD, a
rock label, rather than some tiny bedroom underground operation. For those of
you in 4AD-land for whom hearing this will be the first exposure to the band,
rest assured that this is really stripped down for the dance floor, and only
hints at some of the delights they are capable of. As regards official releases,
I've no idea whether these tracks will appear in this form on future records.
The press blurb describes this twelve as a 'limited sampler only, a taste of the
future'. But is does say that the first single is due in September. I, for one,
      can't wait.

GusGus GusGus GusGus GusGus GusGus GusGus GusGus GusGus GusGus GusGus...

The new GusGus promo is a simply wonderful five track sampling of the
forthcoming album which is entitled "Polydistortion". The catalogue
number is GUS 5 CD. The version I have is the non-catalogue numbered US
edition. The sleeve is like the one used for GUS 2 CD, essentially
CD-sized sleeves of what the 12" GusGus promos look like. A black
sticker is on the front cover and says ``selections from the debut album
"Polydistortion" (46375)``

Track listing...

1. Believe

2. Gun

3. Why?

4. Polyesterday

5. Is Jesus Your Pal?

All songs are by GusGus except for # 5 which was written by Slowblow.
Anyone familiar with Slowblow? I like "Believe" and "Gun" while "Why?"
blew me away... really soothing vocals and a sort of This Motal Coil-ish
feeling was noticed. The version of "Polyesterday" sounds like the BAD
6013 version, buy any way it's a cool song. "Is Jesus Your Pal?" is a
very dreamy, soothing and fine song... this could have been on "Blood"
from This Mortal Coil easily! Well, this really gets me excited about
the actual full length album that's out in the new year! The US number
is mentioned above but I'm not sure about the UK ident. CAD 7001,
perhaps??

New stuff:

GUS 9 12"
        A Believe - Postmix
        B Believe - Underdog Instrumental
Comes in standard GG stock sleeve with a nice label. Be warned that the A
side is 45 rpm while the B side is 33...I started out thinking that the
Underdog Instrumental was EXCEEDINGLY low-key.

Also:

PRO-A-9038
        A1. Polydistortion 8.04
        A2. Barry Delay 6.50
        B1. Gun Acid 7.39
        B2. Polydelay 7.37

Comes in a plain white sleeve, it has "advance only" written on
it...wondering if this is what will comprise the "Standard Stuff for Drama"
12". Gun Acid is simply the Husmix from the Polyesterday 12". Polydelay is
a great ambient version of Polyesterday.

For those completists on the list:

There is a new Pizzicato Five 12" that is one in a series of 8 to be
released leading up to a remix CD coming in the new year.

The latest contains a remix of the track "Porno 3003" by GUS GUS.

Sorry this is short notice, I am picking up the 12" tomorrow, so I do
not have catalog information; I will post it tomorrow. The record is on
Matador U.S. available thru ADA. Check your indie shops most likely.

GUS14 : gusGus have reached a level of promo 12" activity at 4AD
unequaled by any other band past or present. GUS14 carries on the
tradition of vinyl gusGus releases with neat and otherwise exclusive
tracks. This puppy features two new remixes of "Barry" - the "Galaxy"
remix by Gary Martin at Fun House Studio in Royal Oak, MI. The B-side
is an almost unrecognizable Herb Legowitz remix called "M&L". Very good
stuff indeed and worth searching out if you have a turntable!

It's even better than that. It's yet another addition to the seemingly
endless chain of Gus Gus promos, this one being called GUS 15. The
highly informative info sheet that came with my copy states the
following:

"The new album by GusGus, "This Is Normal", will be mastered next week
(whatever that means - I don't know when this was sent out) and will
come out in the middle of April. Before that we will have 2 singles
and, as a starting point for the whole thing, there is the 12" promo of
"Anthem/V.I.P. (Instrumental)" which you have here. "Anthem" won't
appear on "This Is Normal" but a vocal version of "V.I.P." certainly
will."

There is more on this sheet but that is just gibberish referring to the
film, 'Pi'.

So, chances are that the instrumental version of 'V.I.P.' might remain
exclusive to this 12" - or may be not, who knows.
Other than that, the 12" has picture labels and comes in a black card
sleeve.
