The group seemingly doesn't exist anymore, but it should be said that warren and chelle-marie were at the head of this project. they were supposed to release something at one time...they had a complete set of songs. their music has been described as incredibly beautiful and melodic, with fits of uncontrollable noise here and there... * grenadine * warren produced the group's 2nd album, titled 'nopalitos', and the single from that album. rob christiansen, mark robinson, and jenny toomey make up the band. * inside-out * this is the band that karen neal is from. a 3 grrrl line-up, along the lines of other punk-type girl groups. they have several albums and singles out, only attainable via mail order or lucky searching... * liquorice * band make-up is jenny toomey, dan littleton (ida), and trey many. warren produced the band's debut record, 'listening cap', a one-off release with 4ad. they also have a single out on simple machines {'stalls'} and a song on the cd and first limited 10" 'red, hot, and bothered' from the Red Hot organization {the same people that put out 'No Alternative', amongst others}... * warren defever's mystic moog orchestra * japanese noise music with moogs, no guitar. Their first live performance was made up of 9 people playing nothing but moogs and included warren, jymn, and laetitia sadier of stereolab {who the moog orchestra had opened for}. they have a one release {self-titled, i'm pretty sure. i need to check up on the specifics, though} available... * esp summer * warren and ian masters {ex-pale saints, spoonfed hybrid}. a cassette of this recording is available on davin & kenny own cassette label, Time Stereo, and a limited 10" of remixes from the cassette is out on farrago records. a 7" is planned for release in the very near future, on perdition plastic... * esp beetles * a group that has an "all-star" line-up. the band consists of warren, davin, kenny, matt smith, and damian lang. sometimes scott. they have 2 tapes out on Time Stereo and have played live in MI often {along with any other warren band that ever existed.} a split 7" is planned with local livonia noiseband and pals of mine, jennifer wolski, which will also earmark the end of the beetles... * dead his name is alive * once again, a noise group in it's purest form. one song on noise compilation, 'the arbitrary nature of meaning'. also, there is a pd-m song on this cd. as told to me by jeff, the co-owner of Isomorphic Records: "Warren wanted to use a different name since the track 'Do You Want to Have Trouble' is pure noise in the vein of Hanatarash, Hijohkaidan, or early Controlled Bleeding and he didn't want to alienate any of his mainstream fans." * inside-out * this is the band that karen neal is from. a 3 grrrl line-up, along the lines of other punk-type girl groups. they have several albums and singles out, only attainable via mail order... * godzuki * warren produced this band's first "record", which is being released as a set of 7"s on March records, as well as a song that appears on a split 7" with other MI band asha vida. an easy description of their sound is "indie-noise-pop". warren will be producing other MI groups over time... possibly working with monaural next... etc. : if you're seriously interested in hearing princess dragon-mom, please contact the following... I > actually think its HNIA's most accessible work. (i know in the wonderful > world of indie-dom accissble is supposed to be bad, but...) The songs > hang together a little more cohesivesly than War'ns other stuff while > still giving you glimpses of his subversive genius. I just like the fact that His Name Is Alive can re-invent themselves with every new album. There's already talk that HNIA's next full-length album is going to be a different entity even from "Stars On E.S.P." I like "Livonia", "Home Is In Your Head", "Mouth By Mouth" and "Stars On E.S.P." for their separate merits. Livonia: Recommended if you like "It'll End In Tears" or "Filigree & Shadow" by This Mortal Coil, Miranda Sex Garden Home Is In Your Head: Recommended if you like "Blood" by This Mortal Coil (in juxtaposition "Livonia" and "HIIYH" aren't that different, but the latter is more oriented around acoustic guitar), "Ocean Beach" by Red House Painters Mouth By Mouth: Recommended if you like anything arty and noise-based...I keep thinking of the 3Ds' early work (they're an awesome band from New Zealand, check 'em out). Also if you like Unrest/Air Miami, you'll probably enjoy this album. Stars On E.S.P.: Obvious recommendation is if you like "Pet Sounds" by The Beach Boys, oldies radio with a weird angle. If you don't like any of these, it's probably best to start elsewhere--it's a good album but if you're not already an HNIA fan you have to get a feel for what this album evolved from. That's a personal guide...other people might be able to add bands to this "recommended if you like" list to give newcomers a better idea of what His Name Is Alive is all about. And yes, a lot of HNIA's good stuff comes out of subversion, Laetitia Sadier style (she was recently quoted as saying that subversion isn't doing something totally different, but taking something old and underlaying it with something new). Just my 402 cents, Jason Date: Thu, 2 Jan 1997 02:01:23 -0500 From: Jason Bryant (Srilank@AOL.COM) Subject: Non-4AD HMIA (his marsupial is alive) > I'm listening to HMIA-King of Sweet now, and wondering if there are > any other non 4AD releases from HMIA? I heard from an unrealible sorce > once, that they had a few other 7" singles on a another lable. Is this > true? We are even less reliable, but will lend what we do know :) --There was the 7" on Shaolin Temple this past spring entitled "melody farm" which was for lack of a better description a possible outtake of _king of sweet_. It was a split single with little princess btw. --They also had the WB soil samples 7" featuring "Darling" from '93 and the last I checked is still available in some parts of the world in exchange for a kidney or a small skin graft :) --4AD put out a 7" in '91 as a pre-release for _Livonia_ that had "if july"/"how ghosts affect relationships" that are both on _Livonia_. --The flexi from Warped Reality from earlier this year (which is available from listy Susan assuming that she is still here) which is a split with Prolapse. There is also Warren's Time Stereo tape only label, which has served as the creative outlet of the uncountable Defever side projects as well as a few HNIA releases present (live in mexico) and future (the supposed live sets - any word on those? anyone?). There's tons more loosely related HNIA stuff out there, but that typing venture would give me carpal tunnel - and that's just not good no matter which angle you look at it. jason srilank@aol.com
