Date: Fri, 7 Aug 1998 11:55:30 -0600 From: mark von minden Subject: new jessamine record out soon... according to the Kranky website at brainwashed, the new jessamine record, "don't stay too long" will be out august 17th (now, we all now how Kranky is about release dates, but hopefully see this at least by the end of the month). this is what kranky has to say about it: Jessamine - Don't Stay Too Long krank 030 LP/CD >From the initial warmth of the Wurlitzer electric piano, Don't Stay Too Long announces that Jessamine have distilled their experimental sounds into song craft creating a low flying, groove oriented record, with soulful emphasis on the vocals. CLocking in at a concise 40 minute, the band have linked the instrumental forays of The Long Arm of Coincidence to the melodic invention of their singles (as chronicled on last year's Another Fictionalized History). Release date: August 17th Date: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 00:40:05 EDT From: Riouxs@aol.com Subject: Midweek Krankyness. JESSAMINE - Don't Stay Too Long CD (Kranky 030) $11.50 CD/$9.50 LP "From the initial tickling and teasing of a Fender Rhodes electric piano, Don't Stay Too Long announces that Jessamine have harnessed their experimental muscle to song craft. They link the instrumental forays of The Long Arm of Coincidence to the melodic invention of their singles to make a definitive statement. Dawn Smithson's crystalline vocals float over bubbling synths, trade off with Rex Ritter's voice, counter cascades of guitar and weave around Michael Faeth's superb drumming to make each song here direct and effective." Vinyl is 180-gram of powerful wax. Not sure quite what to make of it yet. Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 10:50:45 -0700 From: Chris Palacios Subject: Re: was seely- now Too Pure and Jessamine Got this in the mail yesterday. I picked up the Long Arm...a while ago but never quite got into it. I too found the long jams and the male vocals more than tiresome. I was immediately impressed with the new Jessamine album due to the lack of male vocals-a major improvement by leaps and bounds. To boot the songs were shorter, tighter and ultimately more memorable. Surely not pop- but somehow using the trickery of semi- song structure. The real test will be when the lyrics start to set in. Haven't given it a hard listen for lyrical quality- but the lyrics could be what make this a brilliant album or piece if trash. In any case I am appreciating its tenuous quality at being great and not. It's really a contrast to _long arm. . _ as far as song structure. As stated before it works and works well. It's very catchy and always seems to be wondering back to my cd player. Only 40 min long, but if you don't want to stay too long. . . From: Christian Hartwig Subject: Mogwai/Jessamine Date: Sun, 20 Dec 1998 18:36:25 -0600 I'm still enjoying JESSAMINE's _don't_stay_too_long_ lp. I'm really disappointed that they're not touring to support it though. To get by until they do I picked up _antoher_finctionalized_history_ which is more or less a 7" compilation and self released (?). It's much longer and more moody than dstl but addictive. They seem to be showing their influences more apparently than their previous LPs and there are even a couple of covers. I love their song titles.
