I have seen volume 2 and the Furry Things (I think) were one of the bands. I wasn't over-impressed by this 12". Another Labradford rarity: A Blast First CD called "I Know, We Know, You Know : A Souvenir Complication" (sic) which I found recently. Tracks: Singing Pier (Bruce Gilbert, "Ab Ovo") Pico (Labradford, "Labradford") Angular Momentum (Hovercraft, "Akathisia") Soli (Bruce Gilbert, "In Esse", forthcoming) De-Orbit Burn (remix) (Hovercraft/Scanner, unreleased) Elec. Security (Labradford, unreleased) The last track is 18 minutes long, and is really strange. Starts a bit like a lo-fi Oval, then after about 5-6 minutes there's a pause and some heavy bass and thumping drums with samples of a man singing a short "oh-oh-oh" phrase and violin - gets very weird after that with slowed down vocals, in fact I'm not sure it's Labradford at all after the first few minutes. I saw something recently about a new Labradford album coming up soon. "elec. security" is the laziest labradford tune i've heard yet - the "oh-oh-oh" part is in fact the whole of jon spencer blues explosion's "bellbottoms" slowed down about 1/4 or 1/3...some extra samples n' noises thrown over the top, but dammit it ain't a l'bradford tune! the band and mute records definitely "cheesed out" on this one... i basically would advise skipping on this cd, as the only unreleased tune at this point are the aforementioned "elec. security" and gilbert's "soli" (but that's apprently gonna be on his next album). that is all. regards, (a) clockwork chicken Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 12:16:17 GMT From: Gordon McEwen Reply-To: pure-impure list To: IMPURE-L@PIG.CKS.COM Subject: Labradford/Stars of the Lid - Kahanek Incident Labradford/Stars of the Lid - The Kahanek Incident (Vol 3) - 12" on Trance Syndicate A long time ago, in a message forwarded this list, one of the members of STOL said: > Also planned is > a Labradford split 12"' on Trance, another 12" an Other Music, a 10" > on Enraputured, a split 7' with Windsor for the Derby via 33 > Degrees, and a split with Azusla Plane on Emperor Jones. The split with Labradford came out in August. I guess some of you have it already, but since I havn't seen any posts... Labradford's track "Texas" wasn't exactly what I expected (- not that this is a bad thing). I don't know how it compares to their latest (has anyone got this yet?), or their first two albums, but to me it is dislike much of their s/t. No vocals, no song structure, no beats, little that is recognisable instrumentation, little variation. A looping guitar (?) sound echoes from one speaker to the other for about the first five minutes and eventually fades. Just when you think you're being let off the hook it's suddenly interrupted by a tense, heavily processed, guitar loop which is shortly overlaid with what sounds like rapid wind-screen/shield wipers. Stars of the Lid's "Virginia" fills the other side at 33. I read somewhere that it is composed entirely from Labradford samples! (There is nothing on the sleeve to suggest this - however the Labradford sounds are often fairly recognisable.) Where "Texas" is edgy and dark, "Virginia" is a much more relaxing proposition. It shifts subtly through at least five distinct "phases" - starting with a BE Postscript-like single chord drone which becomes a backdrop to a rather forlorn looping cello. One part features those bouncing beats at the start of Labradford's "The Cipher". The track closes with a slowly fading fuzzy drone. "Virginia" sounded great on first listen and hasn't gone down any in my estimation. "Texas" took some getting used to but has definitely improved through repeated listens. I guess some of you >have it already, but since I havn't seen any posts... Right, I've had it for a few months. Is it only on 12" or is there a CD as well? I had to buy the 12" as that's all they had at the store, so I haven't had a chance to listen to it more than a few times. (My wife: "Jens, this is pretty disturbing. Could you play something else?" My son: "Daddy turn offa bad music! Play nice Mexican music!") It's pretty good, esp. the very long SOTL side, which is very much in the same mega-drone style as their album; the Labradford is definitely more ambient than most of their recent output. (I was told at the store that each band was remixing the other, which explains the track naming convention.) I assume that "The Kahanek Incident" is a series and there are at least two more releases. Anyone know more?
