Date: Mon, 6 Jan 1997 04:56:11 -0500 From: Steven Venn Subject: The Curtain Hits the Band Low are a trio (Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker & Zak Sally) from Duluth, Minnesota who play ultra-slow, ultra-long, sparse and moody compositions with some on the last album clocking in at 10-14 min. This stuff is in a class all its own. All I can say is if you hear them and like them, then you're hooked. I recently got Curtain Hits the Cast and I can't stop listening to it. The combination of Alan and Mimi's vocals backed by the ultra slow beats and twangy guitar is phenomenal. I love "Words" on I Could Live in Hope. I could listen to that in my car over and over again. Their recordings are found on the Vernon Yard label carried by Caroline, most of their stuff produced by Kramer (who has produced many including Galaxie 500) and the discography goes like this: I Could Live in Hope Transmission EP Long Division The Curtain Hits the Cast They are starting a North American tour supporting the Swans apparently (Soundtracks for the Blind was another top 20 choice of mine this year) so go and definately check them out, you won't see a quieter band, or anything else more enigmatic this year. But then I "kinda like them" so I'm biased. Otherwise the only one have "Anon". I don't believe that there was a vinyl version of this release, either. _Over the Ocean_ [Vernon Yard: YARD24CD] has the following tracks: 1) Over the Ocean 2) Violence 3) Being There Tracks one and two are the album versions, but track three is new. There is a 7" version of this release, which only has tracks one and two, and they are also the album versions. --gary Date: Tue, 28 Jan 1997 09:45:48 -0500 From: Matt/Summer Holiday (mdwalbur@STUDENT.BERKLEE.EDU) Subject: Re: low? For anyone who has purchased "The Curtain Hits the Cast," PLEEAASSEEE do yourself and buy their second release, "Long Division." IMO it is their finest album so far. It's all very melodic and beautiful with amazing production by Kramer. The album is veru much in the vein of "Over the Ocean" and "The Plan" from "The Curtain Hits the Cast." The fist song from it, "Violence" is quite possibly my favorite song by them with "Stay" running a close 2nd. GET IT SOON!!!
