MOGWAI Fear Satan Remixes EP (eye q eyeuk032cd) The British group Mogwai's <> album was one of the best of last year for me; layered guitars and noise with quiet, interesting and reflective bits. But every loud band has to have that 15 minute live song to whip up the crowd for the encore. <> is Mogwai's crowd pleaser and it sums up their style completely; starts quietly with guitars, introduces drums, shocks with sonic cathedral of sound before calming and soothing our nerves with a gentle flute. Add an extra noisy bit at the end to make us remember the concert, just in case they don't do the encore. This remix EP therefore does the unthinkable; chops up <> into four different versions. But this turns out to be no different from other remix EP's: I remain steadfastly indifferent to it. If a song is good, why bother changing it? Presumably much more can be achieved when taking an average song and turning it into something great, like with the UK's Long Fin Killie's <>. The <> removes all but the calming part and stretches it out by five minutes, the <> removes the whole thing and puts some of UK's Third Eye Foundation brand of hell in its place, the <> extends the initial calming parts about four times and the <>, which is the best of a bad bunch, keeps the structure but reverses the sound. MYT, without question - 'Ten Rapid' has some good stuff on it but it's a collection of early singles when they were still finding their feet. The '4 Satin' EP is also worth getting hold of before 'Ten Rapid', most recent effort 'No Education...' was a bit feeble I thought. 'Mogwai Fear Satan' is worth the cost of MYT on its own. Completists should look for a double 7" on Plastic Cowboy called "Glasgow" which has an exclusive Mogwai track along with El Hombre Trajeado, The Yummy Fur and The Karelia.
