Date: Sat, 10 Oct 1998 23:50:48 +0100 From: Andrew Norman Subject: Mojave 3 (or: Ivo hates the kidz!) and the infamous Mojave 3 album. Which is now on its fourth playing this evening. OK, it is haunted rather too spookily by the ghost of Nick Drake on a few tracks (the opening and closing songs, for instance), and Bob Dylan's another obvious influence (one of the songs sounds like "4th Time Around", the song John Lennon thought Dylan had copied from "Norwegian Wood"). But if you are going to copy anyone, those two aren't bad role models, and it's got to be better than shagging the corpse of the Rolling Stones like all those Britpop bands. It's a glorious, tuneful, joyful album - probably released six months too late, as it's a summery album from the faded picture of (I guess) Cornish surfers on the front to the lazy, warm country-rock inside (the ubiquitous B J Cole plays slide guitar on a couple of the songs). Not really the sort of thing I'd expect "fifth Seefeel member" Mark Van Hoen to produce, and is the Dave Mercer who engineered a couple of the others the same Dave Mercer who records FSA-influenced drone- rock as Light? 9 tracks in 40 minutes is two more songs than you'd get on some of Lou Reed's seventies albums (and eight more good songs than you'd get on them), and a quarter of an hour longer than "Nashville Skyline". Fits neatly on a c60 with the B-sides from the singles (dropping the demo). He also chose the songs that appeared on the record, and what be used as b-sides. If you were to ask my opinion about the artwork I would simply point you to Harvest. If you don't think the record is good that is fine, you have your own opinion. But I'll tell you that this record is absolutley wonderful from beginning to end. This record is one of the few records that will most assuredly stand through time. Neil is an exceptional songwriter. there is my 2 cents rich Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 16:26:55 -0500 From: Jeremy L Orr Subject: Breeders/Mojave3 I thought the first Mojave 3 album had several good songs and a nice atmosphere, despite its lack of sonic inventiveness...and I'll admit that I haven't heard _Out of Tune_ in its entirety, but I've heard three tracks, and they were bad enough for me to decide that I'm going to pass on the album without too much remorse. The song titles are embarrassing enough ("Some Kinda Angel"?!?), and it just goes downhill from there. Musically, there's nothing original or even interesting there - it's just boring, derivative crap. Success can't be far off now! I am listening to "Mercy" since April 1996 and still enjoy every chord, every time I hear it... actually it is now on a tape with "Give what it take" from the out of tune album.... I got the advance promo back in May/ June and this song is so incredibly powerful.... I listen to this especially one song at least once a day driving to my office... Steeped in the songwriting traditions of Nick Drake, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Mojave 3 have come up with an album that transcends trends and time. Features the singles "Who Do You Love" and "Some Kinda Angel" and seven other songs. Distributed in the US by Sire Records. Out now in the UK. Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 21:35:26 -0500 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: Mojave 3 Mojave 3's American version of their new album "Out Of Tune" will include a bonus track. This tenth track is not on the UK version. I'm not sure which track has been chosen but this US release comes out on Jan. 12, 1999 from Sire Records. Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 12:50:43 -0500 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: US Mojave 3 out Jan. 12th > I just laid hands on a promo copy, and the tracks are: > > 1. Who Do You Love? > 2. Give What You Take > 3. Some Kinda Angel > 4. All Your Tears > 5. Yer Feet > 6. Caught Beneath Your Heel > 7. This Road I'm Travelling > 8. Keep it all Hid > 9. Baby's Coming Home > 10. To Whom Should I Write? Interesting! A US promo out already for this album. The bonus track on the US release is, of course, "This Road I'm Travelling". It originally appeared on the band's summer single "Who Do You Love", BAD8011CD. Why Sire sandwiched the track in the middle of the album is odd and, if they were going to released bonus tracks, why just one and why this particular one?? Any info, Rich?? Neil Halstead has added "This Road I'm Travelling" (from the "Who Do You Love" UK CD single) to the US release as it was considered too good to remain a B-side only track.
