Date: Tue, 2 Jul 1996 17:04:21 CST From: o-o-o (gruisinger@CCTR.UMKC.EDU) Subject: RACHEL'S ax to grind Greetings fellow Rachel's fans (and those who read ALL their mail regardless) I have both the HANDWRITING LP and MUSIC FOR E.S., and love them both. But I must say, I have a brand new favorite Rachel's piece, and it's on neither. It is their contribution to the LOUNGE AX DEFENSE & RELOCATION CD. The track is called "Those Pearls..." and features the following lineup: Kevin Coultas - drum kit Christian Frederickson - viola Rachel Grimes - piano Greg King - 8mm projector (essential for any recording, I know) Eve Miller - cello Jason Noble - bass, vibes John Upchurch - clarinets Bob Weston - bass The track was recorded last year about this time, in Chicago. I'm sure many of you who don't live in the midwest have no idea why you should care about Lounge Ax. Well, the CD is loaded with great tracks, all previously unreleased, by: The Jesus Lizard Shellac The Coctails Guided By Voices Archers of Loaf Bad Livers Yo La Tengo (rockin' YLT, not the mellower incarnation) Mekons Superchunk Seam Tortoise and of course Rachels. Anyway, just image your favorite tiny-club-that-gets-all -the-cool-acts-before-they're-cool closing down. Well, that's what Lounge Ax is facing. If you want the whole story, go to your librabry and search through old Tribs for stuff by Greg Kot, or buy the CD and read a nice synopsis of the whole sad story thus far. The disc is as good or better than most "Indie compilations" of this sort. And all the proceeds etc., etc. Well, if my inept attempt at an infomercial has convinved you to buy it, it is on Touch & Go records, and can be mail ordered from just about anywhere if your record store of choice doesn't carry T&G (if it doesn't, you should consider choosing a new one, if possible). I think CDNow even had it on sale. It's a must, --gary ps-i've only been there once, and it's a closet--I hope they choose "relocate"
