Actually, I think they drew a lot of flak (ahem) simply because they suck so mightily. The only people that I can recall ever having anything positive to say about them are the same people that wouldn't ever publicly claim to dislike *any* 4AD product...and that's not much of an endorsement. And hey, what happened to that story about Ivo not being impressed by their demo tape (or whatever), but being blown away by their live show? As I've said before about other topics, it's interesting to observe how the party line will change over the years. > The sound of scheer, best exemplified by their debut 4AD album > "Infliction" from 1996, is both loud at times as well as sweetly > affecting...scheer's contribution to the 1998 4AD sampler > "Anakin" shows the softer side of the band and is worth a listen > if you want a preview of the scheer sound. However, it should be noted that their track on the _Anakin_ comp, "Say What You Came to Say", is totally unrepresentative of their album. _Infliction_ is basically full of turgid, unoriginal alt.rock; but "Say..." is an incredible and 'achingly beautiful' acoustic ballad. Ergo, don't be fooled...you'll not find anything else like it in their current discography. ---Jeremy Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 17:34:35 EDT From: Spiked hydrogen talent Subject: Re: Liliput/Scheer hey hey... i dont think they suck mightily at all, and i hope im not one of those people you refer to... cause ill publicly claim right here and now: i hate those paladins :) actually, for anyone who hasnt heard scheer yet, i suggest picking up one of their singles first, before infliction... (shea, wish you were dead, demon...) i picked up infliction merely because it was on 4ad, having never heard scheer, and i wasnt overly impressed.. however, i did enjoy the singles a bit more.. (i have no idea why since the style is the same..). anyway, as jeremey said, the song on -anakin- isnt representative of them, but its amazing.. one of the best tracks on the comp., i think.. i really really hope this is the direction scheer is taking in the future, and that they didnt record this song merely as a favor to ivo so people will go out and pick up all those promo copies of _infliction_ sitting in every record store in my area... :) anyhoo.. They don't suck. I recall saying (in public on the list) that I liked them a lot, and I also recall blaspheming that the Amps were pshish, that I hate all post HIIYH HNIA, and never particularly cared for the Pixies (except the odd track). This is an official endorsement. The riffs on the 5th track of infliction (name eludes me at present) are inspired to say the least. I agree some of the tracks on the album don't make the long-endurance grade, but hey, this only ever happens on the all time classics doesn't it? >"Say >What You Came to Say", is totally unrepresentative of their album. Maybe. Perhaps. >you'll not find anything else like it in their >current discography. Where do you make up this stuff? "First Contact" is even more beautiful than "Say What..." - just a bit harder to find (freebie 2 track sampler which I can't remember where it popped up from). Listen to it and weep. Andie Ps. They are great live too - and Audrey is really friendly and cute too. It totally knocked me on my ass (for those of you who haven't heard it, the album version sucks by comparison). Naturally, I eagerly awaited the official cd releases, which for me, turned out to be a string of disappointments, with "Infliction" being perhaps the most disappointing of all. I can't deny that Scheer are probably the closest thing to a run-of-the-mill alterna-pop band that 4AD have signed to date (although I'd like to point out that Modern English weren't really much more than a typical classic alterna-pop band - and let's not even talk about Colourbox). For me personally, there have always been 4AD bands I was less than impressed with, although many bands I was initially disappointed with eventually grew to rank among my favorites. I, for one, am statisfied that Scheer are capable of making really great records... it just appears they haven't quite gotten around to actually DOING that yet. Their first album was rather lame, but then that's true of alot of bands who later went on to make really spectacular records (try judging Cocteau Twins solely by "Garlands", for instance, and see how they rank by comparison). One thing 4AD has always been good at is recognizing great potential even before it was realized, and so I prefer to remain optimistic. :)
