It's a fairly pedestrian rock track, with little in the way of a memorable tune as salvation. Track two is an acoustic reading of 'Sad Loved Girl' which is rather sweet. There follows a cover of Blondie's 'Hanging On The Telephone' which is transformed from a bright pop-punk song into a gruesome slab of mid-paced grunge, with all the cliches intact of quiet bits followed by chugger-chugger guitars. I hope it's tongue-in-cheek. The ep is rounded off by an instrumental, 'Cannon', which is probably the best track. Very rawk, but strangely compelling. Not an essential buy by any means, but as trad-rock goes Scheer are about as good as you get. I have only listened to the A-side, but I think it's safe to say that my "give the kids a break" policy ends here, unless the B-sides are pretty spectacular. Cover is a load of embryos (sheep?), and is the most disgusting thing I have seen since the Pixies' "Trompe le Monde" eyeballs. The new Cocteaus album is absolutely bloody wonderful, though. -- Andrew Norman, Leicester, England 17/04/96 nja@le.ac.uk, http://www.engg.le.ac.uk/staff/Andrew.Norman/ Can - Soundtracks
