Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 18:07:46 +0000 From: Andrew Norman Subject: New Seely album "Seconds" arrived in the shops today - and the vinyl and CD versions seem to be different (grr!!!). I bought the vinyl one, which will probably go back to the shop tomorrow to be exchanged for the CD as it's a dodgy pressing (little hollows all over it like acne scars). Track listing: Intro Syballine ("Syballine part 1" on the CD, I think, it's a fairly short track anyway) Soft City Like White Too Fjord Freedom ("Too Fjord" on the CD) The Sandpiper The Hourglass Love Letters to Rambler San Salvador ("remix" on the CD, this is the track from the "Soft City" 7", "extended" on that) Consumer Pet It's Your Day Karen Adios Outro The differences are from memory - there may have been another track present in altered version, but all the non-duplicated tracks are only different mixes. I really hate it when bands do this sort of thing - extra tracks on the CD version I can just about stand (I still buy most albums on CD, but it would be nice if those people who only buy vinyl had the chance to hear everything), but this "buy the album on both formats" scam really pisses me off . It's a pretty good album, too - less of a "here are the groups we listen to" album than the first one, this is a mature album. Comparing a tape of the vinyl with the CD, the vinyl's "Syballine", "Too Fjord Freedom" and "San Salvador" are identical to the CD's "Syballine (pt 1)", "Too Fjord" and "San Salvador (remix ed.)". I'm not sure whether to be pleased that they haven't put alternate versions on the two formats, or upset that they are trying to fool people that they have. It's a fine album without this sort of nonsense - perhaps I'll be charitable and assume it's a cock-up. And much as I hate people who say "the B-side on the 7" is the best", the B-side full length "San Salvador" on the 7" *is* well worth getting hold of. The album version's only just over a minute and a half long. Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 11:40:45 EDT From: "C.K. Coney" Reply-To: pure-impure list To: IMPURE-L@PIG.CKS.COM Subject: Seconds of Seely Seely's new cd is entitled "Seconds", and it is fantastic! "Julie Only" made my own personal top ten for '96, and frankly I never thought Seely could top themselves on a second release...ya know, so many bands disappoint the second time around. But they've done it...big time! Their trademark male/female counterpoint vocalizations/harmonies are still there, yet more intricate than ever. The rhythm section is better than ever...they have some of the best drum parts I've ever heard. I think they are very avant-jazz oriented, meself. Still spacey after all these months, too. Joy seems to have crafted a different singing style...can't describe it except to say that she uses her voice to slide into phrasings in a way that (again) reminds me of jazz singing. Her vocal styling reminds me just a bit of Flora Purim, if folks know that name from the jazz world. Joy's also mixed up front more this time, to great advantage. Of course Steven sounds great, too! On first listen I loved this cd & stopped everything else I was doing. It is *that* good...and I've got it playing now. If other folks have acquired it & want to talk about specific trax, I'm game...there are several real stand-outs, even an instrumental that is just gorgeous, kinda Hawaiian sounding. Trax follow: Intro Syballine (pt. 1) Soft City Like White Too Fjord The Sandpiper The Hourglass Love Letters to Rambler San Salvador (remix ed.) It's Your Day, Karen Adios Outro Line-Up: Steven Satterfield, Joy Waters, Lori Scacco, Eric Taylor, with Scott Herren. Recorded at Microgroove by Steve Askew Produced by Scott Herren and Steve Askew Catalog number is one any band would kill for, I would imagine: Pure69cd Buy it!
