I'm not feeling too descriptive today, but if you like the gentler side of guitar-and-drums bands, then I think you'll really enjoy this one - a rock version of Heidi Berry is the best I can come up with tonight. Babacar have been mentioned before on this mailing list - Caroline Crawley [Shelleyan Orphan, This Mortal Coil] sings, plays piano and Boris Williams [Cure] is on drums. The instrumentation isn't as varied as Shelleyan Orphan but Caroline Crawley's singing is exactly what you'd expect - soothing and quite quirky. It may be quite a rare CD - I was only successful in finding it on my third attempt in London this weekend. It says 'Copyright 1997' so I'm not sure it's really really new, or that might just be a printing error I guess. It's on 'Mesmer' records, which I think means that they released it themselves. It's distributed by Pinnacle. Babacar have contributed a track ('O Morro Nao Tem Vez' [Favela]) to a tribute album of a new compilation of songs by Anton Carlos Jobim - the man responsible for penning 'The Girl From Ipanema'. The Album, which includes versions of Jobim's songs by the likes of Pizzacato 5, Lucky 15 (featuring Momus, Sean O'Hagan and Louis Phillipe) was released in France on February 23rd by X111 Bis Records (#177192). i s'pose ill have to order all these goodies from the UK, since none seem to be available in the US yet..... cheers! -=robn Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 18:30:57 -0500 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: Babacar Babacar's album FINALLY was released in Canada today after much waiting around on my part. This is essentially Shelleyan Orphan under a new name and had this come out on 4AD I'm sure more would be aware of it. I'm listening to it right now and it's really good! If you like Shelleyan Orphan and Caroline Crawley's amazing voice, be sure to pick up the selftitled album from Babacar on Absolute A Go Go Records. AGO-BM073-2
