Send corrections or additions to Brant Nelson, nelson@astro.ucla.edu A Shelleyan Orphan web page is located at It has some images and lyrics, but the discography below is much more complete. As far as what is still in print goes, I believe it's only Century Flower and Humroot. I have seen both on various CD online services. Helleborine ----------- UK LP Rough Trade Rough 97 CD Rough 97 CD Midsummer Pearls and Plumes / Epitaph Ivy and Woe / Blue Black Grape / One Hundred Hands / Cavalry of Cloud / Southern Bess (a field holler) / Anatomy Of Love / Helleborine / Jeremiah / Seeking Bread and Heaven / Melody of Birth US LP Columbia CK 40545 CD??? (was one ever released?) Southern Bess (a field holler) / Anatomy Of Love / Blue Black Grape / Jeremiah / Cavalry of Cloud / Midsummer Pearls and Plumes / Epitaph Ivy and Woe / Helleborine / One Hundred Hands / Seeking Bread and Heaven / Melody of Birth Note the slightly different track order. Also features a completely different version of "Anatomy Of Love". I think there are also some other very subtle differences, but I haven't documented them (ie. I seem to remember that "Epitaph Ivy and Woe" is a little bit longer on the UK version, but I haven't looked into it.) Lyrics are included with all releases. Cavalry Of Cloud EP ------------------- UK 12" Rough Trade RTT 170 7"?? CD?? Cavalry Of Cloud / Tangled Perpetual / One Hundred Hands (for Strings) The title track is identical to the LP version. "Tangled Perpetual" is a wonderful non-LP track, and One Hundred Hands is a different recording. This is reportedly the second version of Cavalry Of Cloud they recorded The first one was replaced because the band thought it sounded too twee. Now THAT would be something to hear! Anatomy of Love EP ------------------ UK 12" Rough Trade RTT 207 7"?? CD?? Anatomy Of Love / Harmony Drone / Theme Title track is from the LP, while the other two are unique to this EP. Century Flower -------------- UK LP Rough Trade Rough 137 CD Rough 137 CD Shatter / Timeblind / Tar Baby / Self / Summer Flies / The Silent Day / Century Flower / Amanita Muscaria / Between Two Waves / A Few Small Hours The LP was mastered at 45 rpm and I believe The sleeve has a clock face imprint on the flower image in Roman numerals, and the inner sleeve includes lyrics. US LP Columbia CD CK 45198 (same track order) LP plays at the normal 33 rpm. Includes a completely different version of "Between Two Waves". Shatter EP ---------- UK 12" Rough Trade RTT 217 7" CD Shatter / Tar Baby (live) / Amanita Muscaria / Timeblind So that's 3 LP tracks and a live studio recording, which isn't terribly essential to hear. Humroot ------- UK LP Rough Trade CD R2792 US CD Columbia CK 46050 Muddied Up / Dead Cat / Fishes / Burst / Sick / The Little Death / Big Sun / Dolphins / Mull / Long Dead Flowers / Swallow / Supernature On A Superhighway No differences to report this time. Advance copies from Columbia have a very subtly different mix of "Burst". It's so minor that if Columbia hadn't told me they were going to remix it I'd have never noticed. Also the last song was listed as "Loop" on the advance, while left unmarked on the true release. Burst promo single ------------------ I have never seen one, and as far as I know, this was just a one-track cassette or cd. Waking Up promo CD ------------------ US CD Columbia CSK 4657 Burst (remix) / Dead Cat / Supernature On A Superhighway / Late Night / Shatter / Summer Flies / Cavalry Of Cloud / Southern Bess (A Field Holler) This features tracks from all three albums, plus a song from This Mortal Coil's Blood album. KCRW radio show --------------- They appeared live on KCRW's Snap around the time of their gig with the Cure in Los Angeles. They played lots of songs, including The Silent Day, and Burst, and at one point the piano player entertained with a seamless combination of Tubular Bells and Lionel Ritchie's Hello. Compilation Tracks ------------------ "Ice" on a Columbia promo CD called New Edge Music (CSK 2230). Also included on a Columbia compilation called Acoustic Christmas. It's a slow Christmas song sung by Caroline. "Suffer Dog" on The Liberator, sort of an Animal Rights tribute album, on Deltic Records (UK, Delt 3 CD). It's an anti-vivisection tune sung by Jemaur. They also contributed a cover song to some tribute album. Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, or something. Obviously I don't have it, so if someone could fill me in, I'd be grateful. Other groups ------------ This Mortal Coil - Blood A few tracks were sung by Caroline: "Mr. Somewhere", "Late Night" and "Help Me Lift You Up". Spiritualised - Pure Phase Caroline sings on one song. Ether Performed at 4AD's 13 Year Itch. The group consisted of Caroline on vocals, Boris from the Cure on drums, and some others who might have been from the Cure as well. It was all new material except for "Late Night" from Blood. There probably are bootlegs circulating around, and I've heard rumors that 4AD recorded parts of the whole event, but I don't know anything for sure beyond that. I don't believe Ether did anything after that show, and I think it was around that time that Shelleyan Orphan disbanded for good, Caroline running off with Boris, who left the Cure around that time too. | Brant Nelson | 1817 Corinth Ave. #10 | open your eyes | Dewdrops Records | LA, CA 90025-5567 | to northern skies | Uncommon music that deserves to be heard | | http://www.astro.ucla.edu/students/nelson/dewdrops.html Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 10:45:27 -0700 From: Michiel Janssen Subject: shelleyan orphan Thank you for the discography of Shelleyan Orphan. But it isn't complete There is another contribution to a tribute album. On the Cd 'Brittle Days' (a tribute to Nick Drake) the Orphans play a beautiful version of the song 'Joey'. (The guitar is replaced by piano) And another song is on the Velvet Underground tribute 'Heaven and Hell'(there are different cd's in this serie) Don't know wich song, haven't found it yet. michieljanssens@hotmail.com
