A real talent. Check out 'Either > Or' and 'XO'. Quality records. Very funny that you mentioned him. I have never been familiar with his music until last night when I saw a documentary on him on the public access television channel here in Atlanta(currently visiting). I was amazed by his music that was in the documentary and it has been sticking in my head like glue. I can't wait to pick up one of his albums, I almost had to race out and pick one up today(and I am a little harder to please than most folks). A lot of the music I heard was experimental, pop, folk... real real real catchy. It reminded me of a catchier ESP Summer type of thing. It seems like everyone else has heard of him except for me... I guess he did a bunch of songs for the big movie 'Good Will Hunting'. I guess a fell asleep again. I have no solid points of reference for anyone not familiar with him, but I suppose that if you like Red House Painters, Jeff Buckley, The Blue Nile, Lloyd Cole, Matthew Sweet and that sort of thing that you'll be suitably pleased with Mr. Smith. It was suggested by a close friend, and then I learned from others that this guy apparently has a song on the "Good Will Hunting" soundtrack, so if anyone has that or access to it, you can sample his sound there. He was on Jools Holland last Friday (not much use as a piece of news I know, but I just thought I'd mention that he has had some recognition here too) Particularly good edition it was too. Blondie, massive Attack WITH LIZ FRAZER!!!, um, some other good people (I've forgotten already - Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid was on too and I laughed so hard that my memory fell on the floor). Anyway it's often repeated within 6 months so look out for this edition! kenny Date: Wed, 16 Dec 1998 13:37:25 -0500 From: Drew Schwickerath Subject: elliot smith factoids + tarnation tidbit i'm glad to hear discussion of elliot smith. i picked up his "roman candle" cassette (on cavity search) maybe 4 years ago or so on a trip to portland. this is definitely an excellent album. nice 4-track home recordings of acoustic guitar, vocals, (maybe some drums - it has been a while since i have listened to it). at least a couple of the songs on the "good will hunting" soundtrack come from that recording. i still haven't picked up his newer albums, but he certainly deserves recognition. there was a co-interview thing between him and john (something) of "x". it was on the same webpage that had an artist interviewing artist interview with kristen hersh a month or so ago. (the url was posted to this list, but i can't remember it. very lame of me, i know, but i just checked my bookmarks and it isn't there. hrm.) he used to be in a band called heatmiser. while he wrote the songs for them also, and did sing and whatnot, it was a different sound. totally. they were fairly rocking and a bit harsh. still, "cop and speeder" is a good album. just much more uptempo and (aggressive?) than his solo stuff. probably not appealing to most of my fellow listies.
