     Subject: Spooky: Found Sound


After three superb eps over the past 18 months, Spooky haven't let things slide
for this, their second album (following 1993's Gargantuan). As the title
suggests, there is sampling a plenty - radiators, lawnmowers and all kind of
metallic clunking. But this isn't wilful experimentation for the hell of it.
Everything fits together in a percussive force, that still finds plenty of time
for stretches of blissful melancholy. If you need pointers, then Autechre's Tri
Repetae is a pretty close place to start. But this is probably a little less
minimalistic, and for the most part the tracks are pretty short - 16 in just
over an hour. It's not easy to pick out highlights in an LP which is more or
less one long highlight. Superb.

Fraser/Guthrie/Raymonde (whoever they may be) that samples extensively from a
Cocteaus track, but I couldn't say which one not being a fan.
