Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 22:30:06 -0600 From: the boy in zinc Subject: new 4ad signing (very cool) so, i don't think this has been brought up on this list at all, so here goes... i was interviewing guy fixsen (from laika) this week, and at some point we got on to talking about his production work, and he said that the only artist he was working with was a new signing to 4ad named vinnie miller...he described him as having a voice similar to tim buckley, and said that he was very open to the idea of using loops in his music...guy apparently worked with him recording a few tracks, which were what got him signed to 4ad...the two will work on an album for release sometime (don't know when)...perhaps someone can fill us in? Their/his track on the _Anakin_ > comp was > easily the best thing on it. (see review at Silencer) Surprised > to hear he's > working with a producer Guy engineered and co-produced that track along with Vinnie Miller (aka Starry Smooth Hound) - he was a bit peeved he wasn't credited on the Anakin comp - not least because it's a legal requirement of his production contract. 4AD gave them the money to record two tracks on which the label would base their decision to sign Vinnie or not. Happily, they loved the tracks and decided to go ahead with the album. It's a little bit of a novel set-up - Vinnie is doing most of the stuff at home in his bedroom, but sends DATs to Guy who's kinda executive producing the tracks from the other side of London. He gives his opinion, both creative and technical on what's being recorded. Guy will mix and do all the final bits of recording/overdubbing at a commercial 24 track (probably about 3 weeks in the studio or so). The first two tracks were done in a more standard way - Vinnie and Guy went to a studio for 5 days and recorded the tracks from scratch. I don't know when the release is scheduled - probably a long way off as we've only heard an additional 3 tracks. I ran into Simon Harper from 4AD at Glastonbury and he said Vinnie was changing his name to Frogman although Vinnie hasn't mentioned it. Simon thought this name was better as both the French and Japanese were having trouble with Starry Smooth Hound - Simon's head of international, so I guess this sort of thing matters to him! - margaret laika@compuserve.com Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 13:06:49 -0500 From: Rich Holtzman Subject: ok ok ok starry smooth hound. Locked in his apartment in London, tinkering on all sorts of machines, coming up with some wonderful sounds and textures, maybe thinking to much. Sends 3 songs (raw songs) to Ivo, ivo adores them. But ssh is dissappointed when he sends the tape becuase the next day he has a bit of a birth/revelation of what he is working on. waiting for the tapes. In my worthless opinion, ssh represents some of the most promising & interesting stuff that will be released presumably to end this century or begin the next (going by the widely excepted, but wrong assumption that this occurs 2000 rather than 2001). Anyway, ssh will be working fiendishly until the time when he gets together with Guy Fixsen to finish things up. In the meantime dreamt u in a dream is coming up on one year since you first heard it and it still has not gotten boring. One song can create a lot of excitement I am just as eager as you are, I promise to keep you posted. Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 00:22:20 -0500 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: Re: The Frogman cometh...when?
