Nobody expected that within a few months, that dog. would be signed to a major label and touring the country. (For their first record, the band signed to DGC, but in an unorthodox move, they allowed Ivo Watts-Russell's 4AD label to release their disc worldwide.) that dog. the record came out in late 1993 in the UK and in March '94 in the US. The single and video for "Old Timer" made the college universe sit up and take notice. "There was a certain chemistry that stuck out," says Tony, "because of the violin and the Andrews Sisters harmonies over these thrashy little punky guitar songs." The self-titled debut came out with two different cover designs. The UK Guernica version features a dog with a bird in its' mouth on the cover while the US Geffen cover features a pic of a little girl, arms out- stretched and mouth wide open as if she was screaming. Both covers are by that dog. while the Guernica one was overseen by Chris Bigg at v23 with a cool band logo by Paul McMenamin. Members of that dog. can also be found on Cocteau Twins' opening act Spain's album "The Blue Moods Of Spain" on Restless and on The Rentals debut on Madonna's Maverick label. Petra Haden, formally of those 4AD/Guernica punkers that dog., has joined her other project The Rentals as her main gig. Seeing how that dog. died a slow death over three albums and how Matt Sharp feels confident of The Rentals 2 million plus selling debut enough to quit his day job as bassist in Weezer to be his own boss as a Renter, this could be a new musical lease on life for both artists... http://www.addict.com/issues/4.12/html/lofi/Cover_Story/Rentals/
