Whilst scrabbling around in the dustier corners of my house, I rediscovered my
back issues of 'I Feel Like An Alarm Clock' fanzine. Of particular interest is
an article by one Glenn Sheldon, an old friend of Kristin's. In it he describes
the earliest history of the band, first as Kristin Hersh and the Muses, and then
as Throwing Muses. He also lists the tracks on their first two demos, as well as
the commercially available first cassette release that they put out prior to
signing with 4AD.

The first tape (as Kristin Hersh And The Muses) was recorded in '83 with the
following line-up: Kristin, Tanya, Elaine Adamedes and a drummer called Becca.
The tracks are:

1. Nuke Your Heart
2. A Silent Promise
3. Don't Look Back
4. There's No Excuse
5. Don't Look At Me That Way
6. Lizzie Sage
7. Eyes That See
8. Happy Birthday

There are a few more details about the second tape recorded in '84, including
the lyrics. For this the name of the band had changed to Throwing Muses, and
David had replaced Becca on drums.. The tracks are:

1. Catch (Hersh)
2. Let's Go Outside (Donnelly)
3. Machismo (Hersh)
4. It's Not Too Soon (Donnelly) (yes, that one)
5. Bird Of Paradox (Hersh)
6. The burrow (Hersh)
7. Capital A (Donnelly)
8. Clear And Great (Hersh)
9. Desert (Adamedes)
10. Ant Song (Hersh)

The third tape came out in '85, after the Stand Up ep, and after Elaine had been
replaced by Leslie Langston. This was actually sold commercially. The tracks

1. Call Me
2. Sinkhole
3. Green
4. Hate My Way
5. Vicky's Box
6. America
7. Fear
8. Raise The Stones
9. And A She-Wolf After The War
10. Fish

Now some questions

Anyone have any idea whether this fanzine is still going, or what the author,
Allen Salyer, is up to now? It was based in Royal Oak, Michigan. I lost contact
with him about five years ago (and also his friend Laura who co-wrote the 'zine,
and also did her own called 'Crude' that I contributed to).

Secondly, does anyone have any firm news about the reissues that Throwing
Music/Ryko are going to be putting out, and what will be on them?
