(vonminde@RINTINTIN.COLORADO.EDU) Subject: windy&carl/elysium...lookiehere! alright, i thought i'd crawl out from under my pile of books to give one of my sillyreviews of the new windy&carl record--'drawing of sound' here's the deal kidz... windy&carl--'drawing of sound' ICON (ICI26) 1.you (4.38) 2.lighthouse (9.03) 3.venice (8.22) 4.awhile (10.10) 5.whisper (10.43) first off, yucky cover art...just not my thing. silly line drawings...:) but...ignore that. somewhere out there, swirling about in a vast sky, there exists windy&carl, michigian's favorite drone/ambient/noisekateers. like flyingsaucerattack in places, but with much more polished and complex constructions. 'drawing of sound' is exactly what i wanted it to be after i heard the 'emerald' 7". gorgeous layers of sounds that don't get muddled are complemented by quiet female vocals. yet, the vocals aren't quiet in quite the same way as many bands of this nature (that is, hiding behind the sound and singing almost as if the vocalist is afraid to be heard); w&c's vocals are prominent enough to not get lost in noise, and yet don't break the overall subtle mood of the music. what we have here is a record that is intricate yet somehow simple in its beauty. make no mistake, it's filled with lots of droney/fuzzy guitars feeding back all over the place, but it's not harsh. in fact, my overall feeling is one of absolute fragility. (hmmm...i better stop this line of thought, i can feel the ridiculous metaphors coming on! :) ) hiding beneath all that fuzz is often a simple melody, a grounding bassline, or intricate guitar work that sometimes makes me think of good ol' justin jones in an odd sort of way. i'd choose this over fsa or llc (as much as i enoy both these bands). hmmm...this is not driving music. :) & did i mention that it is better than their more ambient 'portal' album? well, it is... so, have i interested anyone??? well, if you want it, you can order it from EAR/Rational (ear@xmission.com). 'tis purty cheap too. on a different note: elysium (or whatever they're called now) still gets frequent rotation on my CD-player, and if you haven't bought 'glisten' yet, you truly are missing out. i happened to have the treat of spending the afternoon with john&jenny from said band yesterday, and i got to hear not only a couple of john's 4-track wondertracks (some of the best drum machine driven guitar soundscapes i've heard in quite some time...bravo!), but also i got a two song acoustic performance in my room featuring a new song that was even more beautiful than 'dulcinea' (could it be?) the future looks very nice! once again, contact brant (he posts enough, eh?) and order 'glisten' now! the quicker they sell those, the more chance we'll see another album someday (right, rod?). .orangejuice/toothpaste propaganda minister deluxe.....xxx. ---------------------------------------- .mark.
