Date: Wed, 1 Jul 1998 09:52:43 +0200 From: Xavier Cristina Pau Subject: X-Mal Deutschland Hi to everybody, i've been trying to compile a discography of X-Mal Deutshland since any can be found in the web (as far as i know). So, please help me to fill the gaps before putting the discography on my webpages. I specially need information about their very first released, as i'm not sure if all the data are right specially the tracks and their order (A/B sides). I also need more details or their last recordings, specially the Devils album. Further information on the band would be very interesting for me (concert reviews, pictures, miscellaneus information...) (if that was on the list, i apologize... i wish i hadnt deleted it after i read it) :) and i know theres at least one person out there who can provide you with a ttracklisting for _devils_ since i just traded him my copy about a week ago:) Date: Wed, 1 Jul 1998 14:55:26 -0400 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: Xmal Deutschland After their brief stint with Phonogram, the German ex-4AD band Xmal Deutschland found a venue for releases with Hamburg based Metronome Musik. The album that resulted was 1989's "Devils" 837 940-2. Byu this time, the band was scaled down to a trio - Wolfgang Ellerbrock and Frank Z with the frontwoman Anja Huwe belting out her wail-like caterwaul. Much of the 4AD-era styled vocals are now replaced by silky clean radio-friendly vocals though. Virtually unrecognizable as the 4AD or even Phonogram versions of the band, "Devils" sank without a trace. As a competent pop album, it really isn't that bad. However, knowing the previous albums from the 4AD and Phonogram years can only spell disappointment for listeners of this stab for a chart hit. Regardless, I love Anja Huwe's voice and I appreciate some of these songs on their own merits. Songs like "I'll Be Near You", "I Push It Harder" would have made nice darkly intelligent additions to radio playlists everywhere... "Devils" was also released in Canada on Attic Records (ACD 1267), the home of Weird Al Yankovic and Katrina and the Waves at one time or another. From what I understand, "Devils" is as rare as "Viva", the Phonogram release with the snappy v23 artwork and design. My CD is a German copy; I believe there was also a UK issue, but I'm not aware of any differences between the two. >1989: >LP-Devils: >tracks? >Edited by Phonogram (Germany only?) As Jeff Keibel mentioned, Devils-era Xmal appeared on the Metronome label. The releases I have from this period are all from Germany. 'kaelbermarsch' was originally released on the 1981 lp compilation 'lieber zu viel als zu wenig' on ZickZack. 2. speaking of - in some way - related items there's the 1997 release '2' by wall of guitar sound artists 'rossburger report' on the german strange ways label. there's not been a '1', though. the title of this cd may have been derived from the fact that it's not the original xmal related line-up to have recorded the cd. maybe a sort of 'volume 2', and certainly just '2' musicians who recorded this cd, namely markus e. lipka and chris mews. thus file manuela rickers and peter bellendir under 'rossburger report vol. 1 (1992-4)', the live period in which the ensemble celebrated sessions for german radio station ndr and created the reputation for its particular live sound that may have caught ivo. rumour says they just didn't succeed in transferring their live atmosphere onto master tapes, and fell apart after some time. 'rossburger 2' is an ambitious, but - imo unsuccessful - try to finally ban this atmosphere onto cd. cheers sebastian Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 09:25:26 +0200 From: Xavier Cristina Pau Subject: Re: x mal question Hi all There is an obscure X-Mal single (7") recorded in 1981 and edited by Zick-Zack (ZZ31). I have never seen it but the songs seem to be Schwarz Welt and Grosstadtindianer. Don't know exactly which is the A side song, as i've read either Schwarz Welt or Grosstadtindianer depending on the source of information. If anyone has this single please add more details. The follow up to this release was the mentioned Incubbus Succubus maxisingle only (12"). Also prior to 4AD exists two compilation appearences, first in the LP Deutscland Strike-Back (SBR 24 LP), edited in 1981 and including the track Kaelbermarsh. Another compilation from 1982 is called Hours (Plurex 2400), edited in Holland in 1982 including the track Zu Jong, Zu Alt (the song included in the first Incubus maxi, although don't know if it's the same version). Anyway, for further information on X-Mal discography you can check my webpages at http://personal.redestb.es/blancinegre, i've compiled a quite complete discography of X-Mal Deutschland (comprising pre, 4AD and post-4AD periods) with informations given in this list and in some web pages (apart of my discography). Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 15:04:11 +0100 From: s0058581 Subject: Re: x mal question hi there, regarding the releases of zickzack there are at least 2 more by xmal. 1) Single ZZ 31 "Xmal deutschland" no further info, often reffered to as their first single. 2) ZZ 45 "LIEBER ZUVIEL ALS ZUWENIG - ZickZack Sommerhits 81" (translated: better too much than too little). this is a compilation lp containing the xmal track "Kälbermarsch (2:39)" (kaelbermarsch) issued june 1981. the included band-info can be translated as followed: "in order to get away from the all-girl-band image (wich has been spread by all kinds of news papers in word and picture and on the cover of their first single) X-mal Deutschland changed their line-up: the bass is now played by Wolfgang. the recording of "Kälbermarsch" was done at Hafenklang-Studio in Hamburg in mai by Anja (voice), Manuela (gitarre), Caro (drums), Wolfgang and Fiona (synthi) and mixed by Gode (ex-Front). in case you didnot noticed the text is based on Bertold Brechts writting. prior to their first single (ZZ 31) only Fiona had musical experiences, playing in a scottish punkband in 1977. now all five of them are working on new songs, a new realease for autum and first of all they try to overcome the adventures of an exhausting tour with D.A.F. (deutsch amerikanische freundschaft)." by all means this is just a rough translation. a picture of a gig by the band is included. if you are intrested i will post a scan to the list and tell me if a review of said track is required. so there is more of them out there. hope this will help. kaj
