"pearl" is a great song...a lot of it is if you give this cd a chance, i think. i got "the real ramona" as a gift from a friend and loved it, which was then i started picking up their other releases. << Yeah, that's the thing with Red Heaven -- when I first listened to it, I liked Furious but it seemed to decline from there. But as I reached the last song, something clicked and I could see the album as a whole, and its enticing sense of distance and ineffable mystery. It fits in well with what Throwing Muses are all about. The best album of 1995: Red House Painters, _Ocean Beach_, hands down. Also the best album 4AD have ever released. There are 13 (my new lucky number) in no particular order: *Heavenly Voices III* This series is probably the best compilation series for my tastes. Lots of female vox. Such a wonderful collection of beautiful songs that i don't even program any out (a rarity for compilations). Yeah, if you're into this sort of music you probably have a song or two on here as i did, but ... *Tricky* Maxinquaye: Rebellious and self-indulgent at the same time as being seductive and charming. A perfect meld of engaging rhythm and voice. *Lisa Gerrard* The Mirror Pool: Though this song starts off as weakly as she did in concert, it picks up and with a gradual momentum that has you in it's grip well after the album has stopped playing. Overall, the disk is wonderful and she was even better in concert once she got going. *Lori Carson* Where It Goes: Although i wish Stina would have come out with an album this year, Lori's CD is a good substitute for that sort of quirky intimacy. I loved Lori's work with the Golden Palominos and this album proves that she doesn't need a heavy beat to move you. *Innocent Mission* Glow: All the rumors you heard about songs sounding like "rip-offs" of other artists (Mazzy Star, Sundays, 10K Maniacs, etc.) are well founded but it's amazing how inspired and well done these "rip-offs" are. I see their next album as being a masterpiece. *Mouth Music* Shorelife: Well MM's first album had me intrigued by the bizarre blend of celtic and modern pop/dance music. The second album dissappointed me too much to enjoy the silver lining (incorporating african influences, seemed to make it so much more "normal" due to how much african influenced there is in popular music). But, i'm glad i risked the 3rd album, "shorelife," since it's mostly dancey and light but has enough quirk to interest me and enough ether to keep me dreaming. *My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult* Hit and Run Holiday: The carefree decadence of TKK allows them to perform this quasi-retro soundtrack to wild abandon with perfect ease and flair. This album provides an alternate pathway for the stale post-industrial dance music scene. So why haven't i heard H&RH on the dance floor?!? *Crash Worship* Triplemania II: Never staying in one place long enough to be classified these hippie, ... i mean ... tribal ... i mean ... industrial ... i mean mamba ... uh ... retro?. These guys and gals of ADRV sure know how to put on a live show but for those times when they're not burning down your local club put on this disk for a moogy good time. *Bjork* Post: I've always loved a good Bjork tune whether it be with a jazz group (Gling-Glo), the Sugarcubes, or solo. This album is no exception, but i'm sure all those interested have already heard it. *Eden* Fire and Rain: One step forward for the music one step back for the vocals. The music became more mystical, more ethereal, less Depeche Mode. The vocals took a slight turn for the worse though. Nevertheless, this is a great album and i can't wait for more Eden &/or Sunwheel. Anyone heard any of the other splinters of Eden (one was called Soma i think and there was another too, Snog?)? *The The* Hanky Panky: In this case einexile was right. :) (nothing more to say) *Step Right Up* There are several excellent songs on this tribute to an excellent songwriter (Tom Waits) including Waits covers by Drugstore and Pale Saints. Even the Violent Femmes redeem themselves with a good song on this album. The tastes are just too eclectic to do anyone any good though so i recommend a programmable CD player. *The Grassy Knoll* s/t: These wild jazzy, almost (but not quite) industrial, instrumentals defy chategorization. For some reason i want to draw an analogy to Laika but it doesn't work. You'll just have to hear it yourself. Biggest Dissappointments: *Kate St. John* Indescribable Light: ug, the blight of muzak. *Siouxsie and the Banshees* the rapture: has she lost ALL inspiration? *Boo Radleys* Wake Up!: Wake up is right! Booo! wake up! Giant Steps was so wonderfully quirky and wake up just seems so chipper and pointless. *Bel Canto delays* I wanted the new album but all i got was impatience. *no 4AD-L end of year poll* there's still time Lars, we can still do it, can't we folks? How will i know if i fit in with the collective consciousness? -cz EPs, Tindersticks, and Shinjuku Thief. Well, there's always next year. I will break the results up to help those of you with computers as dumb as the one I've got. There are 4 results in this one, with more on the way soon. The results are accurate and I have taken no bribes. There are results from 41 different list members (not a lot, in my opinion for a list of around 400). I could not possibly post everything in some categories...The list of non-4AD songs for example goes on for 12 pages alone. I've included here the most significant results. If you have questions, e-mail me at CreigJ@aol.com Hope these are easy to read. I have treated ALL votes equally, whether I agree with them or not. It is not my place to judge what people have selected. Nor do I feel it is in any list member's place to criticize what others have chosen-it's simply what they feel. And finally, please don't quibble over some of this stuff (ie-"Hey, the 4AD calendar wasn't really a 4AD release!") I've counted what I felt to be acceptable, and when something was glaringly out of place, I personally contacted the voter about it. CJ Each category is listed in order.
