MIRZA Andronomus / Bliss Out v.7 DRL-043 Limited LP 8.00 / CD 10.00 Mirza, which means royalty in Persian, are a San Francisco quartet who play ghostly psychedelic sounds. The ghost of the summer of love. Their music is like lying on the grass in Golden Gate Park & watching the sun filter through the big trees while Ravi Shankar and The Jefferson Airplane blast away in a free form psych-instrumental jam. Consciousness expanding. KACTUS Suffocating Tone Fuzzy Box FUZ007/DRL037 7î 3.50 The biggest pop stars in Japan invade American with this their second single.ìSuffocating Toneî is an exclusive, grade A, Bo Diddley with early Lab style, big Pop-Rocker that sounds like lost Magical Mystery Tour outake. The girls & boys of Kactus sing along to a solid bassline and beat that grooves and bounces along like the train at Disneyland, past all the colorful, oversized flowers and buildings of tomorrowland on a sunny Saturday. AMP Perception Darla (drl036) 2x12î 10.00/ 2xcd 12.00 Volume 4 in the bliss out series. A melacholic instrumental epic mood piece in four movements. 88 minutes of music. This record is the full Amp ensemble incorporating the sound of an English winter rainstorm and a church choir with their signature melancholic space drone, tone, vocals and found sound. Music for you and that special someone to pull the covers up over your heads with on that dark rainy day. Ampís music also evokes introspection, self-reflection and perhaps sentimentality. Good for quiet time alone or shared with a close friend, Amp have undoubtedly become one of the heaviest sounds around. FÐXA Venoy Darla (drl033) 12î 7.00 / cd ep 8.00 Volume 5 in the bliss out series (formerly titled ìGreenfieldsî). Two overtures. 31 minutes. The kings of Michigan space rock launch their interstellar soundcraft in two overtures of soulful electronic bliss. Music for floating above the Earthís atmosphere or at least at home in a big cushy chair with your favorite libation. Thereís no denying that Randall & Ryan are nearly single-handedly responsible for the Michigan space rock mini-boom and that the music they create is imbued with a uniqueness and special quality that makes the F¸xa sound a cut above the rest. THE FEELINGS Dearling Darling Pop Secret/Darla (drl035) LP w/ bonus 7î 9.00 / cd 10.00 The hi-fi follow up to last summerís debut success. Portland, ORís most popular new group. Ralf, Loren, Tim and Pat are back with a strong new record produced by Aaron Day. The Feelings had a busy year recording a new batch of their irresistible casio-tinged pop songs (so many we had to put an extra 7" with the full length LP) and playing shows with such indie-rock stalwarts as Built to Spill, Archers of Loaf and Pond. Exploring strange new worlds of technical aptitude and sonic cohesion, the Feelings crafted a swirling dervish of a record, one that combines the bitter and the sweet to ends that are, frankly, totally rad. Their approach to songwriting is relentless but not excessive, seditious but never insincere. Like their cohorts in the Halo Benders & Built to Spill (2 bands with which Feelings guitarist Ralf plays), the Feelings know what to do with a catchy melody when they find it: they play it. BÐGSKÐLL Distracted Snowflake, Vol. 1 Pop Secret/Darla (drl031b) lp 8.00/cd 10.00 Playful electronic summer soundscapes and sculptures. Songwriter Sean Byrne has outdone himself this time. Enchanting melodies and sonic dissension combine to form an uncanny musical equilibrium that is, at once, entirely original and completely familiar. Distracted Snowflake Volume 1 is the first of a two-part series (the 2nd will be released by Shrimper this summer) furthering Bugskull's explorations in sound, less goofy than last years Snakland and more tuneful than the Crock Soundtrack. Their first new material in nearly two years reflects Sean's fascination with percussion and melody, augmenting the usual tape loops and samples with everything from clarinet to mouth harp. The result is an album that is less electronic than organic, a collection of frequencies that would make no sense by themselves, but somehow converge to form some of the most engaging music around. A.M.P. ìHeart & Soulî Darla DRL038 12î 7.00 / cd ep 8.00 A.M.P. is Richard of Amp w/ Karine of Amp guesting on vocals. Amp are Englandís master proponents of dirty, symphonic, space drone. Once upon a time there was a band called The Secret Garden, in which Richard, Gareth & Guy Amp, Dave Light and Dave Flying Saucer attack played together. Their common thread can still be experienced today through any of their current individual recordings. Two epic length spooky sides. Music for alien abduction. Clear vinyl in a printed clear vinyl sleeve. Vinyl & CD availability limited. NEW BAD THINGS Ennui Go! Pop Secret DRL039 cd 10.00 Ennui Go is 11 new songs somewhere along the lines of Thinking Fellers, Clash, Prince & sister Swiss band I Americani. In the egalitarian NBTs sound cooperative everyone plays and everyone sings -- everything. Thereís the hardcore line-up where each band member plays the instruments he or she owns, but they switch around. Theyíve really switched on for this record combining the exuberance of their famous live shows with a stunning new vocabulary of sampled loops and beats. With Ennui Go, NBTs school you in their own special way with their usual sophisticated humor and whirlwind tours through pop history. GREENGATE Metaphysical Vibration Fuzzy Box (DRL034) cd 10.00 Imagine The Muppets playing light hearted electronic space pop somewhere between Stereolab and Kraftwerk on samplers and sequencers. Imagine the happiest record on earth. Metaphysical Vibration is pure pop for todayís electronically charged space heads. Greengate are Toshiaki (Japanese) and Johnnie (Irish. This is their first record. All vocals are in (Japanese accented) English. Humorus and from the Heart. Johnnie, it turns out, is Johnnie Fingers of THE BOOMTOWN RATS who now lives in Tokyo and works as a producer/remixer. Johnnie says he does Greengate with his friend Toshiaki in his free time as a headache reliever, just for the joy of making music. ORANGE CAKE MIX Silver Lining Underwater (DRL031/bliss 3) cd 10.00 Volume 3 in the Bliss out series is an all instrumental ambient work, which reminds us of why The Durutti Column is so special. 12 serene soundscapes that put the listener in a euphoric state. This is music to take anti-depressants to. Like Vinny Riley backed by The Aphex Twin and Sonic Boom. Silver lining Underwater, unlike Fluffy Pillow is firmly rooted in the present. WINDY & CARL Antarctica (DRL027/ bliss 2) 12î 7.00/cd ep 8.00 Time slows down, your heart rate drops, the massive sound of ìAntarcticaî as slow, heavy and breathtakingly beautiful as a glacier envelopes. Here Dearborn, Michiganís King and Queen of etherea follow their critically acclaimed second record The Drawing of Sound with a solid ambient epic. 47 minutes. 3 songs FLOWCHART Tenjira DRL025 cd ep 8.00 Volume 1 of The Bliss Out. We are proud to begin the series with Sean and Brodie, a.k.a. Flowchart. The two 22 year olds spend their time making mood elevating electronic pop and producing raves from New York to Philadelphia. Itís music to make beautiful music to. Itís the sexiest sound since The Moon and the Melodies and the greatest ambient epic since Music for Airports. ìTenjiraî means to have tea in the sun for breakfast. Itís music for Sunday morning, meditation, sex. Itís the theme for your new life. The one in which you stop smoking & drinking and begin studying Zen.
