Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 16:41:35 -0800 From: Brant Nelson Subject: Dewdrops CDs for sale This is a semi-annual reminder about the Dewdrops record label. You won't really find anything mentioned here that isn't at our website. The main purpose is to keep us fresh in your minds and to introduce us to those who may be unfamiliar with what we have to offer. Dewdrops (the label) started as an extension of the 4ad-L mailing list, with the wacky idea of releasing a 4AD tribute album, which we did in 1993. There's much more to the story, but I'll save that for an eventual website update. Here's our catalog. First the relatively new release: DEW 006 - Various Artists - Splashed With Many A Speck This mammoth collection gathers old favorites (Cocteau Twins, Lanterna, Love Spirals Downwards, Scenic...) and new discoveries (Starblind, Bethany Curve, Daniel Figgis...) for this remarkable 2-CD, 29 band, 2 1/2 hour event. Milkbone calls it "the finest in independent NoisyDreamyTweeGothBubbleBlissPop," and we call it the clearest statement to date of our mission as a record label: to bring you uncommon music. We've come a long way since DEW 001, and this release says it all. $19.50, 2CD format only. http://techmart.com/dewdrops/splashed.html Back to the beginning: DEW 001 - Thurtene, A Collection of 4AD Covers The one, the only... Love it, hate it, love-and-hate it... This is how we started out. To quote Ivo Watts-Russell (seriously) "I felt really weird listening to it" and "I didn't particularly like most of it...," this might be considered a typical reaction, especially given the almost laughable quality of a few of the songs. You have never heard "Hate My Way" done this way, nor are you likely ever to hear it given this kind of tribute again. Yet there is gold buried amidst the chaff (to mix some metaphors here). UVS, Modern English, Pixies and His Hane Is Alive (among others) are covered with some flair, and the re-interpretations ended up being particularly interesting. 4AD-L darlings The Moon Seven Times even make an appearance covering Clan Of Xymox (quite well, I might add). Available in original pressing green and second pressing red for only $9. CD format only. http://techmart.com/dewdrops/thurtene.html DEW 002 - Orange - self-titled With influences from the Cocteau Twins to Harold Budd to Virginia Astley, Orange would definitely find a home in the hearts of any fans of lilting and blissful music. Vocalist Sonya Waters has one of those incredible voices that can either belt out heavenly lyrics that might be English words or can send shivers down your back while you sit enraptured. She shares styles with Alison Shaw of the Cranes and Virginia Astley. Along with demos, some songs released in an earlier incarnation, and tracks on DEW 005 and 006 this is their only available release. Orange disbanded in 1994. $11.50, CD format only. http://techmart.com/dewdrops/orange.html DEW 003 - Hover - Almost Everything Combining sweet girl/guy vocals, and an incredibly infectious and addictive style, from fun, kick-butt romps along backroads, to charming lullabies, hover has some of the best indiepop songs we've ever heard. Every single track here sings its heart out, with jangling guitar melodies, reminiscent of early Felt or the Field Mice, and an overall exuberance that will have you tapping your toes in no time. almost everything is highly recommended for anyone who follows the indiepop scene, or just anyone looking for a good time. Besides an odd song or two on their own record label, demo tapes, and the track on DEW 005, this was to become their only available release. They disbanded in 1996 and Starlight Conspiracy formed in their wake. $6.00, CD format only. http://techmart.com/dewdrops/hover.html DEW 004 - Elysium - Glisten Glisten is the perfect word for this sun-kissed album, the debut release from Los Angeles band Elysium. Guitars meander and sparkle while Jen's angel-siren vocals pour out emotion into beautiful layers. The music clearly resonates with bliss, with an uncommon elegance and a wonderful sense of subtlety that sets them apart from your other favorites. The results are stunning, original and gorgeous. The CD features 11 songs and 57 minutes of music produced by the band. Half of the album was mixed by Shimmy Disc's Kramer, the other half by Elysium. Disbanding in 1996, Elysium left this album, a self-released 7" and the final track on our 7" as reminders. Returning minus a member as The Von Trapps, they debuted on Splashed With Many A Speck, DEW 006. $11.50, CD format only http://techmart.com/dewdrops/elysium.html DEW 005 - Dewdrops Primer 7" A short, sweet introduction to our label, with two tracks from Thurtene and the Hover album, plus two exclusive tracks from Orange and Elysium. It's an audio business card, if you will, and a summary of where we stood at the time. If you just want a taste of us, then this is where to begin. $3.00, 7" format only http://techmart.com/dewdrops/primer.html Prices are US only. Please add applicable CA Sales Tax. See our website for more details or email me with any questions. For those new to the band that Parasol called "heirs to the Cocteau Twins throne" and AP raved about as a "gorgeous gossamer," this is a perfect chance, for mere pocket change, to check out the music that all Cocteau Twins and Cranes fans should hear. Audio samples are also available for download at the site. We also have plenty of copies of all our other CDs and lone 7" available. Our best selling release to date, Splashed With Many A Speck (double CD compilation) continues to amaze with its collection of 29 bands (Love Spirals Downwards and Cocteau Twins, to name two; Scenic, The Curtain Society, and Lanterna, to name three), and Thurtene (our first compilation, paying homage to 4AD with 13 bands and covers) is just asking to go out of print when the relatively few copies we still have are gone. Any true 4AD fan needs to hear the tongue-in-cheek versions of "Where Is My Mind" and "Hate My Way" as well as the lovingly faithful "I Melt With You," "Michelle," and "Gigantic". Our web site contains all the info you need, and probably some you don't. If you don't find what you need, just ask.
