World: Asia: China

Largest empire in Asia and third largest in the world. Est. pop. 350,000,000 [1901]. [JT]

GLOR: The convict ship containing James Armitage had previously been in the Chinese tea trade.

Armitage: "The Gloria Scott had been in the Chinese tea-trade, but she was an old-fashioned, heavy-bowed, broad-beamed craft, and the new clippers had cut her out."

BLUE: The blue carbuncle was found in the Amoy River in southern China.

REDH: Holmes deduced that Mr. Jabez Wilson had been in China.

Holmes: "The fish that you have tattooed immediately above your right wrist could only have been done in China... That trick of staining the fishes' scales of a delicate pink is quite peculiar to China. When, in addition, I see a Chinese coin hanging from your watch-chain, the matter becomes even more simple."
DYIN: Holmes had been working amongst Chinese sailors down in the docks, from whom he may have contracted a strange Eastern disease.

ILLU: Baron Gruner was a recognized authority on Chinese pottery and had written a book upon the subject.
