World: Europe: Britain: Scotland: Balmoral

Balmoral Castle was a favorite residence of Queen Victoria, built 1854, 45 miles west of Aberdeen. [JT]

The Duke of Balmoral is a canonical favorite: NOBL: of the St. Simon family, and at one time the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. The family was forced to sell the family art collection, but financial prospects improved when his son Robert married the American heiress Hatty Doran.

SILV: His horse Iris ran with Silver Blaze in the Wessex Cup, but finished third.

EMPT: Ronald Adair won a large sum at cards from Lord Balmoral (improper title for a duke, or perhaps this is an improper reference to his son Lord Robert.)
