The capital of Sudan, at the confluence of the White and Blue Nile Rivers. Pop. 69,349 (1907). In 1885 it was taken by the Mahdi, leader of the 1883-1885 Sudanese insurrection, who massacred the entire British garrison, including its commander General Gordon. In 1898 the city was recaptured by the British, who overthrew the Mahdi's successor, the Khalifa. [JT]
