World: Asia: Mecca
The birthplace of Mohammed, and the most holy city in Islam. At the time of the annual pilgrimage, the city's population swells from 50,000 to nearly 200,000 [1901]. The city is off-limits to non-Muslims-- an infidel who is caught in Mecca forfeits his life. [JT]EMPT: After visiting Tibet, Holmes travelled here during the Great Hiatus.
Holmes: "I then passed through Persia, looked in at Mecca and paid a short but interesting visit to the Khalifa at Khartoum, the results of which I have communicated to the Foreign Office."
