World: Asia: India: Sherpur

A fortified plain outside of Cabul and scene of a British victory during the Second Afghan War. The British had camped within the walls of Sherpur awaiting reinforcements. The Afghans engaged them on Dec. 23, 1879 and were driven back to Cabul. The British assault on Cabul began a few days later. [JT]
